regional workshop on Integrated Environmental and Economic Accounting Systems (SEEA) in support of the SDGs

In collaboration with the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the League of Arab States (LAS), the Institute organized a regional workshop on Integrated Environmental and Economic Accounting Systems (SEEA) in support of the SDGs in Amman / Jordan, March 26-29/2018. The workshop was attended by international and regional experts as well as 21 participants representing 11 Arab countries.The workshop focused on the following:

- Discuss the concepts, principles and methods of implementing an integrated environmental-economic accounting;

- Increase awareness of the SEEA system and its application to meet the growing national demand for integrated environmental-economic policies;

- Facilitate discussion among participants in the workshop, share experiences and identify challenges in integrating environmental information into the national accounting systems;

- Identify the challenges and opportunities in the implementation of the framework of environmental-economic accounting in the Arab region;

- Understand the linkages between environmental statistics, the SEEA system, and environment-related SDGs indicators;

- Discuss gaps in the capacity for the development of environmental accounts and the use of relevant environmental statistical data to support monitoring and follow-up on SDGs;

- Establish a basis for regional interactions to address capacity gaps and strengthen the SEEA.

- Support countries to develop a strategy and action plan for the implementation and further development of environmental statistics, SEEA, and environment-related SDGs indicators.
