The first regional workshop on the development of transport statistics and indicators of sustainable development related to transport in the Arab countries was lunched at the United Nations House in Beirut, Lebanon on Monday 16 July under the patronage of the Minister of Interior and Municipalities of the Republic of Lebanon Mrs. Raya Al-Hassan.Organized by the Institute in cooperation with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Arab Asia (ESCWA). This workshop is part of the ESCWA and AITRS work programs in the field of raising and building Arab statistical capacities and contributing to the provision of statistical data to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The Director General of the Institute, Mr. Al-Hadi Al-Saidi, discussed the importance of this workshop and the tireless work that has already been done in the technical preparation of the topics raised by this workshop, and the importance of cooperation and coordination with regional and international partners in this field, especially ESCWA, which the Institute works to support coordination and integration with them to unify efforts and exploitation the facilities available to the two organizations. The Executive Director of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Mrs. Rola Dashti, said that the workshop seeks to update transport databases and statistics in Arab countries, including the production and dissemination of sustainable development indicators related to transport in accordance with international standards. This workshop also aims at identifying the needs of Member States in terms of capacity building and efficiency, as well as identifying possibilities for mutual benefit from successful experiences and lessons learned. The Minister of Interior and Municipalities, at the opening of the workshop, noted that the efficiency of the transport sector and the availability of appropriate infrastructure is an essential element in economic and social development and sustainable development. Where it showed that the transport sector and the transition link between production and consumption partners, deepen the interaction between the regions, and does the human exchanges in various levels and fields. Transportation and transition sector also contributes to urban development and in the development of rural areas, as well as it connects the state with overseas countries.
The workshop, which will run until Wednesday, September 18, will be attended by participants from the statistical agencies in the Arab countries, as well as experts from many international and regional organizations, civil society organizations, universities and the private sector who are interested in developing transport statistics and sustainable development indicators related to transport in Arab countries.
